Microdermabrasion is an extremely popular treatment that has the ability to improve the appearance of skin. It’s typically used to minimize damage to the complexion from sun, acne, minor scarring and age spots, along with areas of discoloration and the fine lines and wrinkles associated with aging.
The technique is minimally invasive, while smoothing pores and overall texture of the skin. It’s appropriate for all skin types and is effective for addressing skin considerations that makeup won’t mask. It’s also the first type of facial of its kind approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The most common way microdermabrasion is performed is with the use of a fine spray of sodium or aluminum oxide crystals combined with suction to immediately remove dead cells. A newer method called hydradermabrasion is available that’s less abrasive and results in less redness. Both methods remove the superficial layer of dead, dull, dry skin cells to reveal the new cells beneath.
Skin with lines, wrinkles, and that appears dull gives the impression of greater age. It can occur at any time, at any age, and for a variety of reasons that include:
- Lack of proper hydration
- Sun damage
- Vitamin deficiencies
Microdermabrasion also encourages the production of collagen, a naturally occurring protein in the body that plumps skin and gives it a taut, youthful appearance. The body produces less collagen as people age and it results in skin that appears less supple and firm.
Microdermabrasion can boost the appearance of the skin, but there are other methods that can be employed at the local spa that can be performed in as little as 30 minutes that will rejuvenate and provide a glowing visage. Non-chemical botanical facials and peels are available that will brighten, correct and exfoliate. Microdermabrasion is one pathway toward more youthful looking skin, but it’s not the only possible solution.
